MANILA, May 31 – The Philippines is in danger of slipping into a recession and it has just recorded its first cases of the new flu virus, but you would not know it from reading the Manila newspapers or watching local television.
A scandal surrounding a celebrity doctor, known for providing cosmetic surgery to film stars and models, and his steamy affair with an upcoming actress have been all the rage, especially since his secret sex video of the two together surfaced on the Internet and on knock-off DVDs.
On Thursday, just hours after the government announced that an economic recession was looming, the two protagonists were summoned by the Senate and questioned in a public hearing, covered live by television and radio.
“Every time we saw each other, there was no conversation. It was all drugs and sex,” said Dr Hayden Kho, 29.
He said he met actress Katrina Halili, 23, at the clinic owned by his girlfriend, cosmetic surgeon Vicki Belo, 53. He performed liposuction on her in August 2007 and soon after, they became text mates and lovers, he said.
He added that she introduced Ecstasy pills to him in a tryst at a hotel.
He admitted he had videotaped their affair, but said he did not know how it ended up on the Net. He said he suspected his friends Eric Johnston Chua and Herbert “Bistik” del Rosario “because they had the video”. He apologised for secretly filming Halili and other women.
The congressional inquiry was called amid efforts by the legislature to strengthen laws against pornography and exploitation of women and children. Proceedings in the house were disrupted when an onlooker emptied a bottle of water over Dr Kho’s head. The culprit was arrested and Dr Kho continued his testimony after patting himself dry with a handkerchief.
Halili, who sobbed repeatedly during the hearing, denied offering drugs to Dr Kho. She also denied being aware of the camera when they were having sex.
“I loved Hayden,” she said, wiping away tears. “I gave my heart and soul wholly to a man who turned out to be doing his own movie. I was stupid. Instead of a doctor, he was a director. I was young, so I was easily blinded. I am the victim here while our video is being viewed on a daily basis. I was abused on the video and I am still being abused in public.”
Newspapers have been giving lurid details of the story on front pages for weeks, complete with bare-chested photographs of Dr Kho.
He was already a staple on the celebrity circuit because of his live-in relationship with Dr Belo, the best-known cosmetic surgeon in the Philippines.
She had a public break-up with him after reports of his affair with the actress surfaced months ago.
Dr Belo, who was in Europe filming a television programme, was absent from the hearing.
In an affidavit, she admitted that she and Dr Kho had a sex video as well, but that she had consented to it on the condition that he delete it after viewing.
She said they split up and she asked his friends to search his computer for the video. She said Chua gave her a DVD of the contents of Dr Kho’s computer and she found out he had sex videos with Halili and other women. In anger, she “destroyed the DVD”.
According to some reports, she and Dr Kho have reunited. “She is blinded by love,” her friend, talent manager Lolit Solis, told the Philippine Daily Inquirer. “She confided in me that Hayden is the only one that makes her happy.”
She said Dr Kho was still living the high life and receiving an allowance from Dr Belo, reportedly at least 300,000 pesos (RM22,000) a month.
“He has been jobless since December last year when he left the Belo Clinic,” she said. “How could he afford to pay for a lawyer like Lorna Kapunan?”
She said he celebrated his birthday earlier this month with a party “held at his parents’ house, but I’m sure Vicki paid for the catering”. – Straits Times
