Monks and students reject junta’s constitution

Jun 5, 2008 (DVB)–The All-Burmese Monks’ Alliance, 88 Generation Students and All Burma Federation of Student Unions issued a joint statement yesterday rejecting the state constitution adopted by the military regime last week. 

The organisations also urged the people of Burma and the international community not to accept the constitution that formally creates a repressive military class and legalises prolonged military rule in Burma. Continue reading

Foreign Aid for Myanmar Still Struggles to Get In

YANGON, Myanmar — Two weeks after Myanmar’s government promised to open its doors to foreign-aid workers, little has changed for relief staff here, and in some ways the situation has worsened.

Access to the country’s devastated Irrawaddy River delta has improved for a few relief organizations, including groups affiliated with the United Nations, since U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon met with Myanmar’s top generals in late May and appeared to extract a promise for greater access to victims.

But most foreigners are still being refused entry, not just to the worst-hit region but in some cases to Myanmar itself. Aid workers also say foreign visa requests are being sent all the way up to Myanmar’s cabinet, which meets only once every two weeks, and even then many requests aren’t approved.
