So, the Moro National Liberation Front leader Nur Misuari  () has threatened to take his claim on Sabah to the International Court of Justice (ICJ).The Filipino influx has reached a stage where there is real fear that where Misuari’s claim fails; our porous borders and the lackadaisical handling of these illegals by the federal government will help him succeed in making Sabah part of the Philippines, in substance if not in form.Even if the tide ends now the one-million plus immigrants who are already here, coupled with the high birthrate among them have already set the clock ticking towards that eventuality.

Maung Waik, Burmese Tycoon, Arrested on Drug Charges

Maung Waik, one of the richest men in Burma and a powerful crony of the country’s ruling military regime, was arrested and detained in late May on charges of drug abuse and involvement in a trafficking ring run by the son of one of the junta’s leading generals, according to a former business partner.

Maung WeikThe arrest was part of a crackdown on associates of Aung Zaw Ye Myint, son of the chief of the Bureau of Special Operations No. 1, Lt- Gen Ye Myint.

Aung Zaw Ye Myint was arrested on May 29 for alleged drug trafficking. When police and military intelligence agents raided his office at Yetagun Tower in Rangoon’s Kyeemyindaing Township, they reportedly found illegal drugs and six guns in his possession.

Aung Zaw Ye Myint is widely known among wealthy Burmese and celebrities as a drug dealer, according to sources in Rangoon. At the time of his arrest, he was in the company of Nawarat, a well-known movie actress.

Speaking to The Irrawaddy on Tuesday, a police sergeant from the Kyeemyindaing Township Police Station confirmed that the anti-narcotics division of the police force carried out a raid on Yetagun Tower, but declined to provide further details.  Continue reading

US backs UN rights expert’s report on Myanmar

WASHINGTON (AFP) — The United States gave its backing Tuesday to a UN expert’s report raising concerns about Myanmar’s recent referendum and called on the military rulers to release all political prisoners.

US State Department spokesman Sean McCormack also called on the country’s military rulers to uphold their pledge to give international aid access to victims of last month’s Cyclone Nargis, which left 133,000 dead or missing. Continue reading
