Burmese Democratic leader Daw Aung San Suu Kyi has picked ‘Loot Lat Yae’ as the theme for her election campaign in Myanmar, urging voters there to put her on the road to Nay Pyi Daw and save the country from tyranny.

She told a crowd of about 500,000 people in Yangon that it was ‘now or never’ to trigger changes for reform.

“We want to save our nation from all wrongdoings, mischief and oppressive military governance,” said Daw Aung San Suu Kyi at a rally at Yangon City hall in central Yangon.

Daughter of the Burmese Independence hero General Aung San, Daw Aung San Suu Kyi is regarded by many Burmese as having the best chance among all the leaders that have surfaced so far to get a shot at becoming the country’s next democratically elected prime minister.

Her opposition National League for Democracy created history in 1990 when it wrested eighty five percent of seats but was denied to transfer power by the military generals. Daw Aung San Suu Kyi now plans to repeat that majority and take control of newly formed parliament by 2010.

“I am 65 now and have lost 20 precious years of my life under different forms of detention. I leave the decision to all of you to decide whether or not you want me to initiate changes. I will accept and respect your decision,” Daw Aung San Suu Kyi said.

But the bespectacled and slim-built leader, detained in 1998 by ex-military general Saw Maung, was contined to be detained by Senior General Than Shwe who may continue to use the same tactics by refusing to transfer power and detain all the opposition MPs.

Personal attacks and unfair tactics

Meanwhile, Daw Aung San Suu Kyi’s political opponents from the Kyant Phut and Military are widely expected to intimidate the voters and to cheat in all possible ways in the election.

Just last night, the Military-led Kyant Phut coalition named Senior General Than Shwe as their candidate to counter Daw Suu. It has also finalised a two-pronged campaign strategy to attack Daw Suu both as a woman who had married a foreigner, loyal to the colonial masters and as a believer of the liberal democracy which will disintegrated into pieces and ultimately destroy Myanmar.

Daw Suu seems unfazed. She told the cheering crowd she has received information that even military rank and file are going to vote for NLD as the general election.

“I challenge Tatmadaw and SPDC leaders to be brave and accept the election results,” Daw Suu said, promising that she would run a clean campaign and not use character assasination to win votes.

Shan NLD chief Khun Tun Oo also criticised the Kyant Phut, accusing them of resorting to personal attacks and unfair tactics.

” Kyant Phut lacks not only ideas, but candidates to fight Daw Suu,” said Khun Tun Oo, whose Shan NLD party is a partner in the Daw Su-led alliance.

“Everybody in NLD has to work hard to ensure our future prime minister (Daw Suu) wins and marches to Nay Pyi Daw (the administrative capital),” he added.
