Agree to disagree

Agree to disagree

Agree to disagree

  1. (idiomatic) To tolerate each other’s opinion and stop arguing; to acknowledge that an agreement will not be reached.
I know we’re never going to agree on the merits of vegetarianism so let’s agree to disagree, shall we?

Agree to disagree or “agreeing to disagree” is a phrase in English referring to the resolution of aconflict (usually a debate or quarrel) whereby all parties tolerate but do not accept the opposing position(s). It generally occurs when all sides recognise that further conflict is unnecessary, ineffective or otherwise undesirable. They may also remain on amicable terms while continuing to disagree.

In democracy, the concept of agreeing to disagree may expose important issues for debate or consideration. This leads to concepts such as adevil’s advocate and a loyal opposition as part of a scrutiny process.
