Asean Charter for Asean Governments and cronies

Recently, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Thailand, as the country holding the chairmanship of Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean), came up with the campaign calling the recently ratified Charter of the Asean – Asean Charter for Asean Peoples.

 

To observers of Asean, this phase seems like a new and positive change for Asean as this sub-regional inter-governmental body has always been referred to as the governments’ club, where there is a lack of involvement from the peoples.

A song featuring former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad is one of the six nominated for ‘Best Song of the Year’ in next month’s independent music awards, the VIMAs.

Malique’s ‘Layu’, which included an excerpt of Mahathir’s favourite poem, ‘Perjuangan Yang Belum Selesai’, was one of the nominees unveiled last night.

Asean charter comes into force

 

The Association of Southeast Asian Nations took a major step toward becoming an EU-style community today with the passing into force of a new charter setting benchmarks for democracy.

The charter sets out rules of membership, transforms Asean into a legal entity and envisages a single free trade area by 2015 for the region of some 500 million people.

It came into force with a meeting of Asean foreign ministers at the bloc’s Jakarta secretariat, 30 days after Thailand became the last member to deposit its legal instrument of ratification.
