Diplomat investigated in hit-and-run case suspended

SINGAPORE, Feb 5 — The Romanian diplomat who is a suspect in a fatal hit-and-run accident in Singapore has been suspended from his duties by Romania’s Foreign Affairs Ministry.

The announcement was made by the Romanian Foreign Affairs Ministry yesterday morning, and it comes after reports said Dr Silviu Ionescu had been charged with manslaughter by Romanian authorities two days ago.

Romanian media reports, quoting the general prosecutor’s office, said Dr Ionescu faces three charges for manslaughter, for fleeing the scene and for giving false statements.

The Romanian embassy told MediaCorp his suspension will hold until criminal investigations are complete.

Dr Ionescu was previously his country’s Charge d’Affaires in Singapore.

The Singapore police said that on Dec 15 last year, the embassy car driven by Dr Ionescu hit three pedestrians in two separate incidents in Bukit Panjang. One of the pedestrians, Tong Kok Wai, later died. The Coroner’s Inquiry into his death will begin in Singapore on March 3.

After the incident, Dr Ionescu had called the police and reported the car stolen. It was later found locked and abandoned at Sungei Kadut Avenue. — Today, MInsider
