BBC:Laughter defying Burma’s junta

Andrew Harding reflects on his friendship with Burmese comedian Zarganar who, despite repeated imprisonment, continues to make jokes about the country’s military rule.

It has been an unusually busy few weeks in the Burmese gulag.

A sudden flurry of show-trials. A brisk and generous apportioning of life sentences.

And now the prison vans have begun scattering the guilty into the quietest corners of an isolated country.

The convicts’ names are probably unfamiliar to you. The authorities would be happy to keep it that way.

Min Ko Naing, Ko Ko Gyi, Nilar Thein, Zarganar, the list goes on.

Like their more famous colleague, Aung San Suu Kyi, these are Burma’s bravest and brightest, devoured by their own government.

Mizzima:Zarganar’s family anxious about his health

by Than Htike Oo

Chiang Mai Imprisoned comedian Thura a.k.a. Zarganar’s family members are extremely worried because he asked for medicines a couple of days ago.

Zarganar asked for a liver extract and medicines for gastric ulcer from his family through a security guard when he was produced before the Rangoon West District court on October 15 inside the Insein prison where he is being held.

“We are worried about his health. We don’t know why he asked for the medicines and are wondering whether it is a preventive measure or for emergency use. We could not meet him in court. A security guard said that Thura had asked for the medicines,” Zarganar’s mother Kyi Oo told Mizzima.

“We couldn’t go because it is far, so we sent my elder son to see him. He seemed to be thinner. We can send the medicines on Monday,” she added.

Are Burma and Zimbabwe “Bonnie and Clyde” gangsters embarrassing no end the 193 plus countries who make up today’s international community?

A freckled Bonnie Parket and thick-mopped Clyde Barrow went on a crime spree in 1932. Both were cut down two years later. Their story anchored the “Bonnie and Clyde” movie.

Today, Burma’s Gen Than Shwe, in Asia, and Zimbabwe’s Robert Mugabe, in Africa, are twins in felony. Their abuse of starving fellow citizens-and human beings-skirts genocide, as controversy on food aid shows.
